Eventually, Zwane relocated to South Africa to pursue her university education.
In 2020, amidst the COVID-19 lockdowns, Uncle Waffles delved into DJing, dedicating eight hours daily to practice. Signing with South African creative agency KreativeKornerr proved pivotal as they secured gigs for her in the fiercely competitive music industry. Her breakthrough came when she substituted for a DJ at Soweto’s Zone 6 nightclub in October 2021, garnering attention with a viral video of her dancing to “Adiwele” by Young Stunna during her set.
Transitioning into music production, Uncle Waffles dropped her debut single “Tanzania” in March 2022, preceding her EP, “Red Dragon.” The meticulously crafted single earned accolades, notably ranking as the eighth best afropop song of 2022 by Rolling Stone. She graced the stage at the 2022 Global Citizen Festival in Accra and collaborated with KFC South Africa for the exclusive “Uncle Waffles burger.” Her influence stretched across continents with tours in the US and Australia, earning recognition as one of the top breakthrough DJs worldwide by Mixmag.
In March 2023, Uncle Waffles dropped her second EP, “Asylum,” which swiftly earned gold certification from the Recording Industry of South Africa. A milestone followed in April 2023, as she became the first amapiano artist to perform at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Her track “Tanzania” even caught the attention of Beyoncé, who sampled it during her Renaissance World Tour.
