He established himself as a want tobe pop artist under the alias “Richard Wilde.” He secured a global contract with PolyGram.

While serving as the entertainment editor for Nine’s Network, Wilkins regularly featured articles and conducted international interviewees in the entertainment industry. Additionally, he has presided over coverage of numerous other major events, including the ARIA Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and the Academy Awards on the Nine Network.

On Wednesday and Thursday of 2019, Wilkins co-hosted Today Extra in place of David Campbell, who was Weekend Today’s host. As Weekend Today’s co-host in 2020, Wilkins took David Campbell’s place.

On June 26, 2009, Wilkins incorrectly reported the death of actor Jeff Goldblum on Today while covering the deaths of Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson live. However, this was later shown to be a fake.
