This album soared in popularity, with hit tracks like “Pitch Black Afro,” “Matofotofo,” and “A Day in my Life.” Impressively, “Styling Gel” emerged as the best-selling African Hip Hop album of its time in South Africa, a record that held until 2014. In that year, Cassper Nyovest’s debut album “Tsholofelo” achieved platinum sales, eventually surpassed by South African rapper Emtee’s “Avery,” which attained double platinum status, thereby reshaping the hip-hop landscape.
Pitch Black Afro continued his creative journey with the release of his sophomore album “Split Enz” in 2006. However, amidst his successes, a shadow was cast when he faced accusations of assaulting a fan and causing property damage in a Johannesburg mall during 2006.
Tragically, Pitch Black Afro’s life took a drastic turn. On the eve of New Year in 2018, he was alleged to have been involved in the murder of his wife. This resulted in his arrest on January 9, 2019. Subsequently, he faced charges of premeditated murder and obstructing the course of justice in the Magistrates Court of Johannesburg. In a somber conclusion to his story, he was sentenced to a five-year imprisonment for the murder of his wife.
Pitch Black Afro Released From Prison
After three years in prison, Pitch Black Afro has been released. Pitch was released from prison on Friday18 August, marking his return to freedom.
According to Singabakho Nxumalo, the spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, “He” was released as his sentence concluded on August 18, 2023. This release was facilitated by the special reduction of sentence.
Nxumalo confirmed that the rapper had been handed a 10-year prison sentence, with five years suspended, starting from June 19, 2020. This sentence was related to the unfortunate demise of his fiancé.
Rapper Pitch Black was found guilty of culpable homicide by Judge J Du Plessis. While initially facing charges of premeditated murder and obstruction of justice, he was ultimately sentenced for the lesser charge.
In 2020, Judge Du Plessis delivered his verdict after considering arguments from both legal sides regarding the severity of the sentence. Despite expressing apologies to the family of the deceased, the judge highlighted that the rapper did not appear genuinely remorseful for his negligence. Although it was acknowledged that the death was not intentional, the judge noted the absence of true remorse.
During his time in prison, Pitch Black served less than three years behind bars due to the fact that he had already spent one year and five months in custody while awaiting trial.

As his sentence has run its course, there are no further conditions attached to his release, according to Nxumalo.
