Overton worked as a sports reporter for the Seven Network in Adelaide during the 1980s and 1990s. Soon after, he joined the Nine Network as a reporter for Nine News before being promoted to weekend sports presenter on Nine News in Sydney and fill-in presenter for Ken Sutcliffe. During Brian Henderson’s term as host of Nine News in Sydney, he also submitted weekday news updates from the newsroom.
Overton occasionally gave weekend news bulletins and filled in for Sharyn Ghidella on National Nine Early News and Today News, as well as Jim Waley on Nightline. In addition, he and Tracy Grimshaw co-hosted Nine’s coverage of the Thredbo disaster.
