Nakai made her television debut on the e.tv hip hop show Shiz Niz, where she emerged as the victor in the Mixtape 101 competition, becoming the first female to achieve this feat. Her breakthrough came in September 2013 when she unveiled her debut single, “Like Me.” The following year, she collaborated with various South African artists, including Riky Rick, on the remix of the song “Amantombazane.”
In June 2015, Nakai released her third single, “Saka Wena,” featuring rapper Ice Prince. This followed her second single, “Whatever,” which featured DotCom and Psyfo.
In August 2016, Nakai offered a sneak peek of her single “The Man,” featuring Cassper Nyovest, as part of her EP, Bragga. The full EP was officially released on September 15, 2016. In November 2017, Nakai received critical acclaim for her single “Naaa Meaan,” featuring Cassper Nyovest, which topped charts on numerous South African radio stations. On November 4, 2016, she hosted the red carpet special for MTV Africa at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards.
In 2019, Nakai co-hosted the hip hop show “Yo! MTV Raps South Africa” on MTV Base, alongside television presenter Siyabonga Ngwekazi. She also announced on May 3, 2019, that her debut album, “Nadia Naked,” would be released on June 28, 2019. “Imma Boss” was released as the album’s third single with its artwork cover on May 18, 2019. On October 15, 2020, she released a documentary on Showmax detailing the making of “Nadia Naked.” Additionally, in May 2020, she signed a record deal with Def Jam Africa.
