Following degrees in International Relations and Government and Politics from the London School of Economics and an MA in Journalism from City University, London, she originally joined the BBC as a graduate trainee in 1986.

She joined the BBC World Service as a Central European correspondent in 1989, and later worked as a reporter for BBC Newsnight.
She worked as a reporter and co-presenter for Channel 4 News from 1998 to 2002 after serving as The Sunday Times’ Paris correspondent for a time. She returned to the BBC in 2002 with the launch of the digital channel BBC Four, where she has since hosted the evening news program The World and its successor World News Today.
From 2004 until the fall of 2021, Lang regularly hosted Radio Four’s Front Row, a nightly arts and culture program. Additionally, she has filled in as an anchor for The World Tonight and other shows and has worked live for the Today show and The World at One.
Lang served as a visiting lecturer in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University in New York City from January to April 2012. She co-hosted “On the French fringe,” a BBC Radio Four program about life in France that aired at 1:45 p.m. from November 19 to November 23, 2012, and looked at how French activities like movies or cartoons had captured the public psyche in that country. Since 2018, she has served as a guest lecturer in the Anthropology Department of UCL.
Lang also occasionally contributes to magazines like The Times, The Guardian, and the Radio Times. In 2008, he served as chair of the Orange Prize for Fiction.
In January 2022, the BBC announced that Lang would be the host of Round Britain Quiz on Radio 4 from 28 March.
