2019 Sex for Grades documentary
On October 7, 2019, Mordi and her team at BBC Africa Eye unveiled a 13-minute documentary that exposed the issue of sexual harassment involving students and lecturers at the University of Lagos and the University of Ghana.
The documentary featured the lecturers implicated in a viral video, namely Dr. Boniface Igbeneghu from the University of Lagos, and Dr. Ransford Gyampo and Dr. Paul Kwame Butakor from the University of Ghana. Dr. Igbeneghu, in addition to being a senior lecturer at the University of Lagos, is also a pastor in the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria.
Dr. Gyampo holds the position of an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Ghana, while Dr. Butakor is a lecturer at the College of Education in the University of Ghana. Mordi, who posed as a 17-year-old admission seeker in the video, revealed that the investigation took her and her team nine months to complete.
Following the documentary, Dr. Gyampo expressed his intention to sue the BBC. Consequently, the University of Lagos suspended Dr. Igbeneghu, and the Foursquare Gospel Church asked him to step down from his pastoral duties. The “Cold Room” depicted in the video, where lecturers were found to be sexually harassing students, was closed by the University of Lagos.
Nigerian musician Adekunle Gold and his wife Simi praised Mordi for her “Sex for Grades” documentary. Notable Nigerian figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President Bukola Saraki called on the Nigerian government to take immediate action against sexual harassment in Nigerian universities. In an interview with Sahara Reporters, Mordi disclosed that she had received subtle threats following the conclusion of the investigation.
2019 – Present
On October 8, 2019, Mordi and her team at BBC Africa Eye released a full-hour documentary that exposed additional lecturers guilty of sexually harassing students. This development resulted in the suspension of Dr. Samuel Oladipo, a lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Lagos.
On October 9, 2019, the Nigerian Senate responded to the outcry of the public and reintroduced the anti-sexual harassment bill, which was read on the floor of the senate.
On July 9, 2020, the Nigerian Senate passed the anti-sexual harassment bill, proposing a maximum jail term of up to 14 years for offenders.
