Jamel Martinez Battling depression sets home on fire

On Saturday afternoon, September 18, a fire broke out in a New York City Housing Authority apartment building in Manhattan, killing at least one person. Just before 4.30 p.m., authorities were summoned to a kitchen fire in an apartment at East River Houses on 105th Street near FDR Drive.

A total of 80 firefighters from the New York City Fire Department responded to the ten-story structure. At 5.12 p.m., the fire was said to be under control. Jamel Martnez, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene after falling from a high position, according to officials.

Martinez, though, may have had mental health issues, according to law enforcement officials. He also allegedly set fire to the kitchen before jumping to his death, according to witnesses. Martinez’s bereaved father, James White, told the New York Post that his son had just been discharged from Bellevue Hospital after fighting depression approximately a month earlier. “My daughter called me and told me that the house was burning and that she was on the Citizen app and that she thinks Jamel jumped off the roof and could be dead,” he said.

White claimed he pleaded with the hospital not to release his kid, who he claimed had “changed” over the preceding two years. He said his son was under a lot of stress as a result of the pressures of graduating from high school. “This was done by my son. “This is my son,” the 53-year-old explained. “He wasn’t meant to leave Bellevue Hospital,” says the narrator. I told Bellevue Hospital that he should not be released and that he should be taken to a program where he could consider things through.”

Despite the fact that White was using prescription medicines, the hospital discharged him anyhow, according to White, who does not live in the building. “He went through something that his mind fell on. He ran away from home, ”White said. “He was already in the news for a missing child. He needed help … people don’t take this mental issue seriously. ”

White believes that drug exposure exacerbated his son’s mental health issues. He stated his son was always interested in computers and technology before his mental health deteriorated and he was introduced to drugs. White described him as a “good youngster.” “He was a lovely, warm, and pleasant young man.”

Martinez landed on top of a car, according to Rosemary Negron, a 60-year-old homeowner. “I’m in such a bad mood,” she admitted. “He was a young lad. When he did something like that, I’m not sure what happened to him. “A 12-year-old boy also stated he heard a huge bang when he saw Martinez hit the car,” he told the Post. “His mother was crying.”

“He was a sweet boy. Respectable, decent, loving and caring. Just a beautiful kid, ”a 10th-floor neighbor told the NY Daily News, adding that Martinez had recently graduated from high school. He also said that she and her daughter were napping at her house when the fire broke out. “Suddenly, we couldn’t see,” she said. “There was smoke everywhere.”

He said firefighters knocked on her door and told her and her daughter to stay put. But they eventually evacuated her home. “We got up and ran because the apartment was filling with smoke,” she said. “We couldn’t breathe. We just ran.”
