Halyna Hutchins was a former Ukrainian journalist and cinematographer who worked on over 30 feature films, short films, and television miniseries, including Archenemy, Darlin’, and Blindfire.

She was born Halyna Androsovych in 1979 in Horodets, Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union. She was 42 years old at the time of her death on October 21, 2021, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.

According to her website, she was born in Horodets, Zhytomyr Oblast, USSR, but grew up in Murmansk, on a Soviet military base in the Arctic Circle surrounded by reindeer and nuclear submarines. She told American Cinematographer “there wasn’t that much to do outside,” which is why she was already a movie fan.

She relocated to the United States to pursue her passion for filmmaking, working in production and fashion photography. She attended the American Film Institute Conservatory from 2013 to 2015, where Stephen Lighthill served as a mentor. Hidden, her thesis film co-directed by Rayan Farzad, premiered at the Camerimage International Film Festival.

In 2018, she was one of the first eight female cinematographers participating in the Fox DP Lab program, which was established to provide greater opportunities for women cinematographers. In 2019, she was named one of the “10 up-and-coming directors of photography who are making their mark” by American Cinematographer. She was director of photography on Adam Egypt Mortimer’s 2020 film Archenemy. She is also credited for work on the films Darlin’ (2019), Blindfire (2020), and The Mad Hatter (2021).

She attended National Agricultural University and then Kyiv National University, first studying economics before changing her study to journalism. Hutchins graduated from Kyiv National University with a degree in international journalism and worked as a journalist in Eastern Europe.

Halyna Hutchins Death

On October 21, 2021, Hutchins was working in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as director of photography on the set of Rust, when actor Alec Baldwin discharged a prop gun, seriously injuring her and director Joel Souza. Hutchins died from her injuries at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque.

On Twitter, Alec Baldwin said “…there are no words to convey my shock and sadness regarding the tragic accident that took the life of Halyna Hutchins, a wife, mother, and deeply admired colleague of ours. My heart is broken for her husband, their son, and all who knew and loved Halyna,” he added.

Among those who worked with Hutchins, Archenemy actor Joe Manganiello wrote on Instagram: “She had such an eye and a visual style, she was the kind of cinematographer that you wanted to see succeed because you wanted to see what she could pull off next. She was a fantastic person. There was no amount of pressure she couldn’t handle. She was a great collaborator and an ally to anyone in front of her camera. “
