Following President Donald Trump’s new policy of separating children from parents caught illegally crossing the Mexican border into the United States, the article was first tweeted by a number of other journalists and public figures, including New York Times Magazine editor-in-chief Jake Silverstein, Shaun King, Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau, activist Linda Sarsour, and former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Gold later withdrew her message, adding, “Deleted prior tweet because gave impression of recent photographs (they’re from 2014)” after it was revealed that the piece was published in 2014, under President Barack Obama’s administration. “Democrats wrongly post 2014 photographs from Obama’s tenure depicting youngsters from the Border in steel cages,” Trump tweeted, tying it to his immigration plan. They believed it was current photos to make us look terrible, but it backfired. For the sake of the country, Democrats must agree to a wall and new border security… Bill with bipartisan support!”
