She specialized in live weather reporting during her two and a half years at KRCG-TV and produced original weather-related history pieces.
The Jefferson City tornado, which happened on May 22, 2019, just before midnight, was one of the major events that Elyse reported. Elyse was in charge of forecasting the storm that day and then supporting neighbors who were seeking cover. Elyse was one of the first responders to the high-end EF-3 tornado that struck Jefferson City since she lived so near to the storm’s path. Her reporting from the storm-devastated area was highlighted in the Washington Post after she took part in coverage of the storm and its aftermath for 14 hours. For their work covering the hazardous weather that night, Elyse and Chief Meteorologist Zach Paul of KRCG were both awarded Local Heroes and nominated in Missouri Magazine’s “Best Of” competition.
Elyse has experience with severe weather, winter storms, and lake effect snow because to her upbringing in the Chicago metropolitan area. A tornado siren in her childhood home’s backyard first ignited her interest in meteorology. She eventually decided to pursue a degree at Valparaiso University in Northwest Indiana since her insatiable curiosity with the weather didn’t let up. She was able to see lake effect snow for the first time as a result, which she considers to be a genuinely thrilling meteorological phenomenon.
In addition to her regular employment at WGRZ, Elyse is also actively connected with the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and National Weather Association (NWA). She most recently received a three-year appointment to the Early Career Leadership Academy of the AMS Planning Committee after completing the program as the youngest inductee in the 2019 class and graduating from it.
