Afante has a strong meteorological background. He worked with the National Severe Storms Laboratory’s mobile radars while studying at the University of Oklahoma’s College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences. Lightning detection with University of Florida academics and a significant tornado research project – VORTEX2 – are among his research credits. At The National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma, he also aided in the analysis of data collected from numerous tornadic storms, hurricane deployments, and other initiatives.
In 2013, he made the switch from research to broadcasting, starting with WJTV, a CBS affiliate in Jackson, Mississippi, where his expertise was crucial in covering a rare winter snow and ice storm as well as a catastrophic tornado outbreak in 2014.
