Proffitt is a general assignment reporter/anchor for WHAS11 in Louisville, KY.
Every weeknight, he hosts the 5, 5:30, 6 p.m., and 11 p.m. newscasts. He grew up watching WHAS11 in Louisville and began working at the station as a high school intern in December-January 1977-78.
Since April of 1987, he has worked for WHAS11 as a news anchor and reporter, and today, as the weekday evening anchor, he uses his position to reconnect viewers with Louisville’s unique history and architectural beauties.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, WHAS11 was the only local news station that used moving film. Doug has spent the last five years working to resurrect this incredible library, displaying exclusive footage from the area on news film.
Since joining in that time span, Doug has covered every big story, including The Carrollton Bus Crash, Standard Gravure shooting, Bill Clinton’s Presidential candidacy in New York (1992), The Winter Storm of 1994, Hurricane Fran (1996), and the Flooding of 1997. In Danville, Kentucky, the 2012 Vice Presidential Debate (Biden-Ryan).
Doug has also served as the lead anchor for live coverage of all three Implosions in Louisville:
The Commonwealth Building (day before the winter storm of ’94), The Belknap Warehouse (1993), and The Milner Hotel (1995).
He was the host of the station’s live coverage of the 2008-09 Windstorm and Ice Storms, which left a record number of people without electricity.
After a week-long series of his stories, the state of Kentucky passed the “WHAS Law,” as lawmakers in Frankfort dubbed it.
It took the Social Security number off of Kentucky driver’s licenses, allowing people’s identities to be protected across the state. The move came at no expense to the taxpayers.
In 2001, he won first place from The Kentucky Associated Press for an article about how Directory Assistance (411) frequently gives you the wrong number.
The Associated Press awarded Doug and photographer Bryan Derby first prize in 2009 for their reporting on “Rose Island,” a popular Louisville amusement park that formerly stood on the Ohio River but was wiped away by the 1937 Flood.
