Friesen has worked as a journalist for more than 30 years, covering everything from small-town Canada to the front lines of history. Friesen most recently served as the Washington, D.C., anchor for Global News’ coverage of America Votes 2016, which included the election of Donald Trump.
Friesen worked as a senior foreign correspondent for NBC News in London before joining Global National. She spent months in Israel and Gaza during the conflict there, followed the disappearance (and murder) of journalist Daniel Pearl in Pakistan, and covered events in Russia, including the terrorist attacks in Moscow and Beslan, during her 11 years there. She also traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Middle East.
She received an Emmy for her election night coverage when President Barack Obama won his first term. Her work has been featured on NBC Nightly News, Today, and MSNBC.
As a journalist in Canada before that, Friesen rose through the ranks, working as a Parliamentary correspondent for CTV News, a national reporter in Toronto and backup host for Canada AM, a reporter for CBC News in Saskatoon and Vancouver, as well as at radio and TV stations in Brandon, Manitoba, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Winnipeg.
Following his return from London in 2010, Friesen joined Global National. Since then, he has anchored numerous breaking news stories on the ground, including the Quebec City mosque shooting, the Fort McMurray wildfires, the shooting deaths of RCMP officers in Moncton, New Brunswick, and the terrorist attack in Paris, France.
Friesen, a Winnipeg native who studied media and communications at Red River College, grew up on a farm. She was given a Southam Fellowship for Journalists by the University of Toronto in 1993, and in 2009, Red River College presented her with the Distinguished Alumni Award.
At the 2015 Canadian Screen Awards, the Global National team won Best National Newscast (CSA). The Edward R. Murrow Overall Excellence Award for Network Radio and Television was given to Global National in 2013, making it the first Canadian show to do so in the award’s 42-year history. She received Canada’s Best News Anchor 2011 Gemini Award (now known as CSA) honors.
Friesen actively supports and promotes the Canadian Alzheimer Society. When she’s not working, she likes to read, travel, keep up with current events, and spend time with her kid.
