Coleman worked as an NBC affiliate (KSDK-TV) anchor and lead night beat reporter in St. Louis, Missouri, focusing in news before joining the network. Coleman covered events in Ferguson, Missouri extensively after Michael Brown’s death while in this position. She was one of the few journalists on the site of the disturbances when the unconscious youngster was shot and killed. Coleman also traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, to represent Brown’s parents before the United Nations Committee Against Torture.
Coleman began her career as a reporter for KIMO-TV (ABC) in Anchorage, Alaska, where she worked on the network’s evening broadcast. During her time in Alaska, she interrogated then-Governor and former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin frequently. Coleman graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in voice communication.
