With close to 30 years of experience in Broadcast Journalism, Gailus won Best Newscast, Large Market in back-to-back Canadian Screen Awards (formerly Gemini Awards). In 2015, the Canadian Screen Awards named him the greatest local news anchor in the country. Chris was nominated for a Canada Screen Award in the same category as co-anchor Sophie Lui in 2017.
After graduating in 1989, he worked as a reporter in Lethbridge, Alberta, covering municipal and agricultural problems before progressing to news anchor and winning a CanPro Award for Best Small Market Newscast Anchor. In 1992, he returned to Calgary as a reporter and anchor for CFCN’s weekend program before joining Calgary 7 (now Global News Calgary) as one of the nightly news anchors.
Chris traveled to the United States in 2000 to anchor the morning newscast at an ABC affiliate in Dallas, Texas. He covered big topics like the Columbia space shuttle disaster and ensuing investigation, the impact of the September 11th attacks on Dallas, and the deployment of US troops from Fort Hood as the Iraq war broke out. He was nominated for a Katy Award, Texas journalism’s highest honor.
He moved to WNYW in 2003 to anchor Good Day New York, where he scored a career highlight in 2005 when he won a New York Regional Emmy Award for “Best Morning Newscast.” In 2006, Chris returned to Canada and joined the Global News family. Prior to that, he was the host and anchor of WNYW’s morning show, Good Day New York, which was the most-watched, locally-produced morning show in the northeastern United States at the time.
Chris volunteers at the B.C. Children’s Hospital, Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, and organizations that assist diabetes and arthritis research and treatment outside of the newsroom. Gailus is also a proud member of the CKNW Kids’ Fund board of directors. Chris and his wife, Jane, are also animal lovers who have adopted many dogs and cats, including their present companion, Susie, a West Highland Terrier.
Gailus enjoys a variety of activities, including rugby, football, basketball, golf, mountain biking, and skiing in the winter. He and his family enjoy traveling whenever they get the opportunity, and their favorite locations are London, New York, and Mexico.
