Johnson was the first married female undergraduate at Lady Margaret Hall, where she studied English, at Oxford University. She dropped out of school to accompany her husband Stanley Johnson to the United States, whom she met at Oxford and married in Marylebone, London, in 1963. Johnson Wahl is credited with “making her name as a professional portrait painter” for Crispin Tickell, Joanna Lumley, Jilly Cooper, Simon Jenkins, and others, but she also painted landscapes in the Vorticist style.
Furthermore, her works range in price from £1,000 to $5,000. Two of Wahl’s paintings are in the Bethlem Museum of the Mind’s collection, and two more are in Oxford University colleges’ collections.
She created pictures of people including Simon Jenkins, Jilly Cooper, Joanna Lumley, and Crispin Tickell, and became well-known as a professional portrait painter. She never had an exhibition during her early career because she moved around a lot and sold her paintings on the fly to support her family.
In addition, while still a patient at Maudsley, a psychiatric institution in south London, she created 78 paintings and had a sold-out exhibition in 1974. Charlotte’s retrospective, which was coordinated by Nell Butler and held at the Mall Galleries in London in 2015, was a huge success. Her paintings have sold for anything between £1,000 and $5,000.
