Kirkwood joined the BBC’s secretarial reserve in London after graduation. She presented short slots on BBC Radio Scotland, then BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 4 after a series of internal changes. She left the BBC after marrying Jimmy Kirkwood and went on to work in recruitment and later as a training consultant for a management firm in Cheshire. She co-hosted a now-defunct cable TV channel, Windsor TV, later renamed Wire TV, with Sacha Baron Cohen in 1992.
Kirkwood returned to the BBC in 1993 as a freelance presenter in the corporation’s Elstree Studios training department, where she also hosted a bi-monthly show for HTV West called Talking Issues. Kirkwood joined The Weather Channel’s new UK unit in 1996, but after it closed down, she received training at the Met Office under the supervision of the BBC, before joining BBC News as a weather presenter in April 1998. She has now been on all of BBC Weather’s radio and television programming, including BBC News, BBC World News, BBC News at Six, and the live forecasts as part of the BBC’s Wimbledon Tennis Championships coverage.
On BBC Breakfast, Kirkwood is the principal weather presenter. In 2013, the show moved from London to Salford’s MediaCityUK, while Kirkwood remained in London, giving the weather on Breakfast via video link. She is a regular contributor and reporter for The One Show, as well as the BBC’s The Weather Show. Kirkwood co-hosted the BBC One show The Great British Weather in 2011. On BBC Radio 2’s The Chris Evans Breakfast Show, she also delivered the weather.
Kirkwood made an appearance on CBBC’s Hacker Time as a guest. She participated on the BBC One panel show Would I Lie to You? in 2014. Kirkwood made a brief appearance on Hollyoaks in October 2018.
