He left New England after receiving his degree to take up his first job as a weekend meteorologist in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, at the then-leading station, KGAN (which was known as WMT-AM-FM-TV). Bernier left Iowa after just eight months to work for The Weather Channel, a nascent national cable channel start-up at the time. The first on-camera meteorology duo when The Weather Channel began airing on Sunday, May 2, 1982, at 8:00 PM EDT was Bernier and Bruce Kalinowski (Edwards).

He relocated to Minneapolis in 1985 and worked at various places including WWTC-AM, the only commercial AM radio station in the country to attempt an all-weather format, Northwest Airlines (as a trans-Atlantic flight forecaster), and eventually KARE-TV, Minneapolis, where he collaborated with his wife, Sally (née Patrick), on the weekday morning newscasts.

Bernier and his family moved to Cleveland in 1988. That same year, he started working at WJW channel 8 as the morning meteorologist, a position he held until 2007, when he switched to nights.
